Well it’s 2018 and the start of a new year with a start of a controversy with the beginning of the New Year Run which was supposedly not sanctioned by the Sports Commissioner Office. Now this all began after the blaming game started during the Klang International Run where three runners were hit by a car during their race. Since then questions was asked if the right sets of permits or permission was given for all the other runs. Regardless of that I thought the KL International Run was well organised though the turnout participants were not as many as I expected for the 10km event. Anyway the run consists of 21km, 10km and 5km runs and since I joined the 10km one, I came slightly later after the 21km runners are on their way.
Parking at Padang Merbok is simple enough and free though you have to do a 10 minute walk I think to Dataran Merdeka. Besides, that 10 minute walk from where I was parking to the event was good enough to warrant as a warm up session for me. When I was there I was very pleased to see some DBKL personnel around and even police handling the traffic. There was ample portable toilets around and there was some tents placed on the road leading to Dataran Merdeka. I was fortunate enough to see the top 6 runners of the 21km finishing their run already!!!
The 10km runners started to mobilise around the 7am mark, we were in our position for the run at exactly 7.15am as expected. I love the route they chosen for the 10km, nothing to extreme simple and straight forward. Though during the intersection towards Jalan Tun Perak between the 10km runners and the 5km runners well that part annoyed me a bit as the road itself was small so it’s kinda bottleneck with two different running groups running in the same area. So I had to do a quick burst plus zig zag here and there to avoid the runners that decided to either walk, walk in row slowing down traffic and those who kept checking on their phone while running in the middle of the lane.
In terms of water stations they are adequate not to mention medical services on site. Overall very well done organization for this year KL International Run 2018 since I missed last year run so I’m glad I joined the run this year. There was a long queue right after receiving the medal and I thought it was for he goodies but well it was actually the last water station. Hence the only thing I do wish was that there was a goodie bag beside the banana and the small bun but well what’s important was the run is conducted safely and perfectly.
Now at the end of it all I clocked 10.2km with a time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 5 seconds which is my best time yet for a 10km run. Though official timing said my net time was 1 hour 23 minutes 31 seconds. Regardless of that I do enjoy my run in the first ever running event for 2018 and I’m looking forward for more throughout this year.
